Is it worth the money to add an additive before adding fish?

I know that the trip from your LFS to home is a stressful one for the fish. They're also incredibly stressed by multiple steps taken to introduce them to their new home. Are products like water conditioners actually effective enough to be noticeable? There are so many. If you use them please list which one.

I use API Stress Coat. Do I think it's necessary, no, but I do use it on both my fresh and saltwater fish when I transfer them. I started using it back in the 90s when I worked in a LFS. It seems to calm fish down while they're in the specimen container and the aloe in it is supposed to help mend their slime coat.
