Is Primer necessary to use when gluing PVC plumbing together? Both for drains and returns?

I recently started by plumbing for my 180 Build, basement 55 gallon sump.
I thought I purchased clear primer but come to find out I used cleaner and then glued everything.
Will I be safe with this, not using the primer? I say yes for my drains but not sure about my manifold and returns?
Help!

I used the clear cleaner on bother my previous 180 my new 150 build and haven' had any issues.
Not saying it's the right way or the wrong way but it's what I did.

I've plumbed two tanks now, and never used primer, just glue right on the pipe and the fitting its going into, never had a leak or an issue. The pipes and fittings have always been brand new and clean though. Not sure how that applies to older or dirty pipe.

Tons of people use just the glue with no issues... atleast you used the cleaner which will make it that much better.

The primer is used to "soften" the pvc and make the glue work better. It's not required by any means. More important is the "twist". Once you get a connection all the way together, wiggle it back and forth or give it a 1/4 turn to make sure their are no glue voids in the joint.
