Need a better pic, from slightly above horizontal. It looks like 1.0258, 1.0259, or 1.0260.

Look at which line on the thermometer the waterline is touching. Whatever line the water touches, that's your salinity. It only works if the water is deep enough for the end of the hydrometer to be floating, not touching the bottom, so make sure that's happenin.

Fill the 500 so when floating the water is at the top.
I just did this reading on one of my systems.
This reads 1.0265.
If the water line is below the 26 the sg is higher.

Like i said i put the hydrometer in, it was floating. But i didnt touch that black line if thats what u meant. This where it stopped. I dont know what i means.

Read the first number you see above the water, looks like it’s 25, then count how many little black lines are between the 25 and the line that is in line with the water, each line is 1, so if the first number above the water is 25 and there are 8 little black lines, then your salinity is 1.0258.

Hydrometers work a little like rulers. So, here's a picture of a ruler.
zupload.png

See how the leaf doesn't reach the 4-inch mark? We can tell that this leaf is under 4 inches long, and we can look at the little marks to figure out exactly how far under 4 inches long it is. Hydrometers work similarly; if the water level isn't exactly one one of the numbered lines, we can count the little marks in between to figure out what the salinity is.
