Is the Plank that much better than the Eheim auto feeder?

I had a friend create a 3D platform for my ehiem to sit on that has a feed pipe 1" below the surface. The ehiem runs, food floats in tube until hydrated and then falls down in tank. I crush flake, dehydrated and pellets so a mix is constantly delivered. 4 times a day. The fish hear the motor and swim to the discharge.

Personally, I’m planning to upgrade to the Plank at some point. I can’t get the sliding lid on the Eheim to actually stay open. So most of the time it rotates but doesn’t actually dispense food. Just an idiotic design. Not to mention, it can’t mount on larger aquariums unless they’re rimless, so I had to mount it in the overflow wall. Just poorly thought out product all around.

You cannot tape the slide open? I never noticed mine move, but some gorilla tape seems like it would hold it.

I’ll see about picking up some gorilla tape. Just seems weird that the device relies on the slide door staying open to work, but the slide door doesn’t actually stay open.

But it’s also a pet peeve of mine when everything you need for a device to work isn’t already included in the box. If the Eheim requires gorilla tape to actually function, then it should have come with gorilla tape. /end rant

Well, I’m just suggesting a solution. I never used tape and never had a problem with the door closing on its own. :)

Fair enough and appreciated. Just not the first time I’ve seen someone mention taping the Eheim to get it to work. But I haven’t seen anyone mention taping the Plank so that food actually comes out of it. Now, whether that makes the Plank worth 5x as much is an entirely different story.

I would use it on a timer. You think that's an issue?
I know it’s late and been addressed, but as long as you can control seconds and would fail off it should be fine. 1min will dump a lot of food.

My controller has only done something “weird” twice and both were due to me inadvently tapping an option and not noticing. I have had far more hardware/built in controller failures than failures on my GHL controller.

A 1 minute run using the plank is about a 1/2 cube of frozen brine shrimp as a reference -

I ended up using two Kasa plugs with multiple shut offs after the turn off -/feeding of 1minute

Thanks folks! Still not sure what I’ll do. But since the tank still has no water in it, there’s no rush to decide. :)

I'll go with the Eheim all day. Especially now that they have a wifi version. I now use the Hydros vesion of the same feeder and since I have anthias, I feed a small amount 10x per day. Basically every hour. I have no issue with the food floating becasue I use the eheim Feeder Station (see below).

In my opinion, it really comes down to what you intend to feed. I’ve had both, the eheim is a decent feeder, but I prefer the plank for a couple of reasons.

The Eheim feeder revolves and has an opening to allow the food to drop into the tank each time the port makes a full turn. If you are using flake food, or freeze dried and the feeder drops it that type of food just floats since it hasn’t been hydrated. If you prefer using a mixture of pellets, flakes and freeze dried, all having different sizes, that will cause a different issue. To accommodate the larger sized flakes or freeze dried you will need to slide open the feeding port to allow the larger food to get through, which will end up dropping a ton of smaller food, more than you probably want to drop in.

I also found that this feeder was a bit unreliable regarding uniform amounts of food being dropped into the tank at each feeding. It works best if you choose to fill it with one type of food only.

The way the plank works makes it much more versatile. The food is pushed out with an auger, so all sizes of food can be simultaneously fed at each feeding. It also has a long tube with a small sicce pump that mixes that food in the water to hydrate the flake and freeze dried and it then released from the bottom of the tube and out into the display tank without just floating into the overflow. This, allows you to feed all types of food of different sizes, textures, and even freeze dried mixed together.

I prefer having a mix of many different foods to feed the various sizes and feedings habits of my different fish. So, for me, The Plank was well worth the money.
How long do you think you can leave it alone if you went away? I know feeding is subjective but average ?

Months. But as others have mentioned in a humid environment you can start to get mold growing. I haven’t tried the drying top that is available. I load smaller amounts from the fridge to keep it fresh.

Thanks for sharing!

I purchased and use the drying top. It works great, at least for a month, no sign of mold. Anywhere and the opening does not seem damp (no cannonball in use).

I got mine the other day. Picked up a blemish to save some money.
I haven’t setup yet cause I am still getting my stuff for my new tank upgrade. I gotta order a 14” tube as I plan to run in sump into the return pump. I plan on using it on my hydros
