Mark Schick's Bio:

Title of the talk will be "Why do you want to grow live foods?"

I have been working with marine aquariums for over 25 years, the last 13 of which have been spent working for the Shedd Aquarium. In my time at the aquarium I have been lucky enough to work with a wide variety of animals ranging from inverts and fish to lizards.

My infatuation with the ocean started on a class field trip in Hawaii in 3rd grade. While walking through tide pools the one thing we were told not to touch was an urchin, how was I suppose to know what Diadema were? From the moment my hand started swelling from having a dozen spines in it I was hooked.

Working through high school at the local fish store I went on to a double major in biology and marine ecology at the University of Alabama. Bouncing between internships and field work I eventually wound up at the Shedd Aquarium.

In 2003 I was responsible for the husbandry side of opening our Philippines exhibit that includes a 5000gallon live coral exhibit and 400,000gallon shark display. Currently I manage the Shedd's special exhibit hall, seahorse collection, and the live foods area.

My main topics of interest center around the SECORE (SExual COral REproduction) project, working toward breeding sea dragons, and live food culture. My first experience with any real culture of live foods was maintaining algae and rotifer cultures in the mid 90's. Since then I have expanded into copepods, mysids and a variety of other salt and fresh water live foods and continue to be amazed at how much there is to learn.

Do you have a banner I can post?
