Hey folks. I have a Fluval Evo 13.5 gallon. Water parameters have been fine. No protein skimmer; I use floss, Rox carbon and Purigen, and daily small water changes.

I'm considering removing the Purigen. I can't find any information about what it actually does. Seachem claims it removes nitrogenous compounds, but a lot of people say that that hasn't been their experience. Some people say the equivalent of "it removes some stuff that carbon doesn't", but without specifics.

Anyone else maintaining their tank with just regular water changes, floss and carbon?

Thanks in advance.

Recipe for success! For an Evo, that is excellent. Lots of other things to consider of course. Are you battling algae? What are your parameters? Dry rock, live rock? Few fish, lots of fish? Regardless, carbon should help and keep water clearer, floss is fine mechical filtration for an Evo, and daily water changes will keep your tank in tip top condition, albeit extra work.

Parameters are all in keeping with best practices for a reef tank. I don't have them with me right now, but I can say that I've never measured a nitrate level above 7 mg/l since the tank has been established. I have about 10 pounds of live rock, two fish, two hermit crabs, two turbo snails, a couple of zoas and a mushroom. I've never had an algae problem ... I scrape a very light film of algae off the glass maybe once a week.

Thanks for your feedback.

That’s exactly what I have! I use a dense floss, clear FX pro, and biomedia. And then 25% weekly water changes. 3 months in and so far minimal uglies

I don't have any biomedia, just the live rock. Though with all that empty chamber space, I'm tempted to add it. ;-)
