What is this brown stuff growing on my Kenya tree, making it not expand? Should I be worried?

Probably a part where it “budded off” and made a new frag.
It tends to have this shrunken brown look for a while. If it stays that way for say… a week (or gets worse and spreads) you can probably just nip that part off. Then it probably was something a bit more nefarious
