Hey fish fam. In in the keys for a few days with family. Doing some snorkling out here near Tavernier FL. Is it possible to find RFA's out here? Anyone know any good locations?
It might have helped if you had asked sooner? Or if you read the Collecting and Snorkeling thread here (see my signature for link). But in general, RFAs are getting very hard to find at all anymore in the Keys.
If you want the very colorful RFAs, there is no place to find them while snorkeling, they are in deeper water.
If you want a more plain RFA, there is a very small island off the tip of Crane Point on Vayca Key (Marathon). The water is very shallow around the island (2' to 4') and the island has vertical walls with quite a few RFAs attached. Most of them can be found on the north and west edges of the island. They can be (are) very difficult to remove as they almost all have feet well planted in holes they can completely retract into.
Crane Point is the green peninsula pointing north. Just off to the upper left is a cloud. At 4 o'clock on the cloud (think lower right) is a tiny island. That's it. We always get out there using an inflatable boat and launching from the Blackfin Resort boat ramp. It's about 1/4 mile off shore from the ramp.
I hope that helps?
