I've gotten to a point where I need to be auto dosing KH daily. I dose from 10am-10pm. I don't dose at night because the tank is in my room and makes noise. Right now without dosing my tank drops from 10 - 8.3 daily. Will my consumption eventually get to a point where the dips at night are too big for my coral to handle? Or am I overthinking it?

First of all, R2R members like RHF and Miami Reef will be the experts here, I am not. But once again I wish we had a "like" button for "fascinating" lol!

Are you saying that you dKH drops from 10 - 8.3 in a 24 hour period? This seems like a big drop, unless you have a mature tank with lots of demand.

Following here to see the feedback you get here 🙂

That is a big dip. Are you testing with Neptune trident?

What are you dosing WITH? Calc reactor? Kalkwasser? Two part?

I have an sps dominated tank with way too much coraline thats been running for almost 2 years. I also think the drop is a bit shocking, my calcium drops from 450-440 daily so I feel as if the ratio is a bit off.

I test with salifert and dose with red sea ALK
So have you tested the alk levels at 11-12 after you’ve stopped dosing and 10am just before you start dosing again?

What is the delta there?

As long as the delta isn’t too big to shock the coral, the lowered alk should be okay I imagine as corals use less alk at night when they don’t photosynthesize

Interesting. It seems you do have a mature tank with a lot of demand. I'm following to see what the real experts say here.

For stable tank that is not such a big drop.

My 90 gal tank will drop 2.7dkh a day if I do not dose

My dosing stops a couple of hours after lights out and starts up again just before the lights go on in the morning (Lights are from 7.30am to 7.30pm). The dosing ramps up during the day with the biggest dose around 2pm.

BTW, I do not just dose Alk, I do 3 part dosing to keep, Alk, Ca, Mg and others balanced.

Does the consumption ratio seem a bit off to you? KH drops from 10-8.3 and Calcium drops from 450-440.

I'm totally wrong, consumption ratio is almost ideal. Its generally a 10 calcium drop per 1.4 KH drop. Where as I'm at 10 drop per 1.7, not bad. Maybe I was overthinking it and my corals and calcifying organisms are growing 😅. Thanks for the responses guys 🤗

The alk demand at night is usually much less than during the day, so on the original question about will day dosing be ok, the answer is likely yes.
