I'm looking at kole tangs but often confused about their colouring because in some photos they look brown and in others they look deep purple, is it a regional difference, adult/jug or just due to antic lighting?

Well I'm the first picture it seems it's under more blue of a light but I agree they do tend to have different colors. It's probably different regions. I'm no expert though lol

Lighting plays a role but so does region. I have one with very faint patterns as well as the eyes, theyre more of a beige color. I will note mine tends to slightly change color, sometimes it's quite dark showing very little pattern, other times it's light brown and the patterns are more noticeable.

Mine is purplish under the light and brownish when hiding in the shadows.

Coloring is based on environmental factors, water quality, diet, cover, and tankmates.

In the top pic by the op, the purplish coloring is a function of the lighting. The bottom pic is more indicative of a healthy, mature specimen.
