Kole vrs Tomini vrs Blenny Algae

Hi friends,

A long time ago I had in my tank a yellow eye kole tang and managed to keep the aquascape of all seaweed very clean (I had no algae problem due to nutrients out of control), after a while I had a plague of ich and he died.

Now I intend to buy another fish that performs the same function but I have my doubts in which to buy. I know you can do the Kole tang, the second option is a Tomini Tang and the third option is a Blenny Algae.

I think the Tomini is similar to kole in functionality.

Regarding the third option I do not know if it has the same ability to eat aquascape algae and keep them clean just like the Kole tang or if on the contrary it has a different functionality?

The price theme varies and may be another factor to consider, since if for half the price of a tang I can have a blenny algae, then I better buy a blenny.

What can you tell me about it?

They are all "supposed" to be algae grazers, so in theory any of the three would work.

However, you might have to tell the fish that [emoji13] I've had tangs that were algae-munching machines and ones that barely touch it.

Ultimately, increasing your nutrient export is the best way to nix the algae :)

Agreed. All will serve a similar function, but specimens within a species can vary greatly in how well they do at a job.

In my personal experience, my Algae Blenny consumes (and grazes on) way more algae than my Kole tang.....that being said, unfortunately you could buy the same two fish and have the exact opposite experience.

Thanks, actually as I said I do not have algae problem, but that does not mean that the stones in some occasions look like brown or with some kind of seaweed, but as I repeat it is no problem and my nutrients are under control.

What I want with the purchase of any of the three is that the little seaweed that appears is eliminated by some fish, but if Blenny gives me the same result as a tang (kole or tomini), then I buy blenny for less than half.

Ok I understand and in case you buy Blenny and he does not want to eat the aquarium algae, what other food is possible that you learn to eat?

I know that tang (from my own experience) eat all the food I use in my tank, so if it is not to eat seaweed from the stones, it would be no problem to feed them.

I have a Lawnmower Blenny and small Tomini Tang in my 60g and I still get algae. Not out of control, but it's certainly not spotless like I would have expected. My Tomini seems to peck at rocks and glass much less than Kole Tangs that I've had in the past.

I think I will go to my LFS and observe which of the three fish is in better condition and buy it, then it will be crossing the fingers so that they really give a good result, more taking into consideration that I do not have an outbreak of algae and it is only To keep as you say, spotless rocks and glass.
