Oh, lucky! The bottom of my bag was a mush of the paper towel they cover the rocks with, unfortunately. It was pretty tough to sort through and I’m sure I missed some stuff.

That one is nice looking, as well. I’m hoping mine is a pistol and that I have no mantis shrimp in there. We’ll see what I can trap overnight.

A lot of noise generally means pistol shrimp, they can be really snappy. They're generally not dangerous, and some types are ones that will pair up with a goby like the ones that people buy. The only thing most species are likely to harm is each other- they may be territorial and fight. Hence some of the noise.

At the size of the one in the spoon, I'd put it back. It may not ever get any bigger, and that guy can't exactly hurt much. He'd just kill tiny worms, maybe an occasional amphipod.

There is a species of aiptasia in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, however from what I've read it is only the Pacific species which becomes invasive. To test this I've been growing one in the qt just to satisfy my curiosity of what it would turn into. He's getting big but no spread in 6 months at least.

To test this I've been growing one in the qt just to satisfy my curiosity of what it would turn into. He's getting big but no spread in 6 months at least.

Interesting. I did more research and aiptasia does occur from North Carolina down to the east coast of Florida as well as the Gulf of Mexico. I looked at each species under the genus Aiptasia and didn’t see anything like the picture you posted. Could it possibly be some kind of condy? The white coloration is striking, and the lack of invasive reproduction makes me question whether it’s actually an aiptasia.

Not the faintest clue. He's been white the whole time. There are a few more on a different rock, also white, but they have not been as keen to take food, so he is by far the largest. Also on the rock is what i believe possibly a baby green tinted curlicue? Excuse the fuzzy picture.

Here’s the trap. It’s just a 16oz. Coke bottle with the top cut off and inverted. I just need to throw a piece of shrimp in there and flood it, then drop it in with the live rock and hope I catch any nasties overnight.

I think my next tank will be all live rock from the start so I’ll probably get over a hundred pounds of the stuff from Philipp. Fortunately, I’m in Florida so I can drive down there too. Have a good time!!

found a serpent star climbing the glass just now. There’s a lot of starfish arms sticking out of the rocks, for sure.

I order 20lbs from Gulf Live Rock. Lots of life but did have some anemones. One is a Curl Que , one is a candy, a couple of Ball anemones and 2 bubble looking anemones. Dan from GLR claims it to be a Light Bulb anemone from the gulf. I also read a list where he said Aiptasia doesn’t exist in the gulf. A few peeps on here say it could be Majano. What your thoughts of Lightbulb anemone?

A couple of the green fingers is codium plant from carribean and snapping sound is likely a mantis shrimp which are in season in the carribean waters.

I received 10lbs of live rock shipped in water today from KP Aquatics. I’m using it to augment and boost the biodiversity in my reef tank which has 60lbs of dry rock that’s currently a few months old. This stuff is great!

Just from moving it to a 20gal quarantine tank, I found a really big brittle star, a smaller one, and tons of sponges and featherdusters. I’m hearing a LOT of snapping inside the tank though, audible from another room. I’m going to drop a coke bottle trap in there tonight and see if I can catch whatever is making that racket.

Can anyone help me ID a couple of things? I’m concerned that one of the rocks might have the start of some bubble algae. I do have a red mithrax crab in the DT so it might get eaten, but if I can remove it before it even gets that far, I’d rather do that.

There are also two other things I’m just curious about, not worried. There looks like some kind of red algae, but could it be a gorgonian of some type? And in the second photo is something I first thought was another feather duster, but it retains the conical form, doesn’t seem to flutter in flow like a duster, and pulls itself into the rock when I made a slight vibration.

Thanks, everyone. I highly recommend KP for live rock, and I’ve had a great experience in the past when getting my CUC from them as well.
