Even though it isn't a bristle worm I have had 2-31/2 inch bristle worms show up in my nano tank that I believe came in on an order of Deco Live Rock from Florida that has a bunch of boring sponges and squirts and such. Moved every thing to a 56 gal tank when I discovered about 6 of them in the rocks caves. I had bought 2 fire fish and several snails as well as hermits that just disappeared. added a couple of large turban snails later on. The Bristle worms were in the cave that the fire fish went into to hide. Found them in the shells of the large turbans where the snail use to be. Some people think they are good scavengers but when there isn't enough to scavenge well it wasn't long before all I had was a baby blue tang and a 6 line wrasse. Anything else that went into that tank became food.

So I'm curious... do these things get this big in the wild? Or bigger? Or do they have predators that prevent them from reaching these sizes? I'm already terrified of going in the ocean, which is why I prefer to create a little piece in my house, but this might just solidify my reasons for never stepping foot in the ocean again.... and dry rock ftw.

Oh, yeah! They can get even bigger.

I've seen some at night even with my blue night lights on, so I could imagine what a red light would show.

I've see some using my blue night lighting, so I could imagine using the red.

How long has the tank been setup? Or do you think it hitchhiked in on something new?

Well, we bought the setup from a wonderful older lady that had the system for 12 years, mainly for the encrusted coraline & being great seasoned live rock. It' a closed 55g. Our intention was/is to place the rock and sand in the 125g we're setting up as a mixed reef. With my health issues, it's taking much longer than we expected. I need to start cutting and welding the steel stand and making my 55g glass sump. This rock, although theres only small hand + sized, it's some of the best rock I've seen for a long,....time.

I have a lot of dry rock to use as well. I want to buy some Tonga branch to place on the left side of the aquascape for smaller fish to hide & live in. CAN'T WAIT,.......to get started ! Like my nephew says, I'M STOAKED ! Lol.......

Man that's crazy.... I 'd freak if I ran across that thing in my tank. It was creepy enough when I got some that came out of Hawaiian rock years ago. Not sure bristle or otherwise but they looked like giant centipedes in the 12-18" range that sometimes reared up like cobras at night and sprayed some sort of black fluid from mouth when they were fighting my coral banded (worms usually lost or retreated). Probably just tiny worms when I got them and they grew to that size.

No expert on worms but don't see any jaws on that worm so don't think bobbit. The ones I had didn't have the jaws or the head feelers like that one does.

Thats not a bristle worm, thats a Eunicid worm. We had one in one of our tanks a couple years back and these things will completely wipe out your coral, ive also heard stories of them eating small fish . We didnt have a 3.5 foot worm but about 10-12 inches. They also do tend to reproduce. After we found the Eunicid worm and removed it, we noticed corals starting to get eaten once again about 2 weeks later. We thought we might missed a second one. We tear down the tank, we found another worm retract into a rock, we decided to break the rock to find a huge surprise. There was about 8 more baby worms. We then decided to get rid of all rocks that had small holes and crevices. We only kept solid rocks. Once about 75 percent of rock were taken out , we decided to break them out of curiousity to find more worms. Nearly every rock had baby Eunicid worms. We replaced the rocks with dry rock, added a pair of six line wrasses , as they are known to eat small worms. No more worms, no more corals being eaten ever since. Im 90% percent sure you have more worms. Buy yourself a red flashlight and look out for them in the middle of the night.
