Honestly to me it seems like it's always been that way. It's a huge commitment and an expensive one.
Typically around spring you see individuals that got a system during the holidays decide it's not worth it, they loose interest, they rush things and end up introducing pathogens.
There's always been a huge turnover in this hobby imo. I have been on the forums for about 20 yrs.

I left and came back. My reason for leaving in 2010 was a tank crash caused by a Tank Sitter.
Having said that, it was hard to give up but I did. Focused on life and my dog.
Getting back into it has been eye opening. The technology, the information, the community, have all made the hobby more enjoyable and accessible.
I would also argue I feel like the cost is high but every thing seems more expensive, but the accessibility and products you can buy are so much more accessible and creating a custom tank with sump design is something I dreamed of 15 years ago.
I think the cost of the hobby is driven by your budget and it can feel expensive if you want to keep up with the Jones’ tank. If you shop around, plan it out, and stick the course, you can have an affordable reef at a cost your happy with paying.
It hit home about 1 month ago, I don’t need to try and replicate this tank or that tank. I am going to do my tank and enjoy it. I also am working on my tank upgrade plan as we are in the process of moving into a larger house and I will have more space.
This makes it so much more fun to have a project to work on (and not dread moving so much)and also I get to appreciate what I have been able to do with the limited space and equipment limitations caused by that space.
Do what makes you happy. All hobbies have costs and expenses and I think the enjoyment is ruined when the hobby has snobby or judgmental people.
R2R is everything but snobby and judgmental. If anything I see people with crazy tank builds suggesting cheaper options to people asking questions.
That to me is the sign of a good community of hobbyist.
If I could just trust buying livestock and corals from the internet I think I would have no complaints. I just worry the little fishy won’t make it and it scares me.

I expect it to get worse with all the turmoil around the world and the economies of so many country’s right now. This type of hobby will always take a hit when the budgets tighten up.
We all gotta stay strong and support each other around here! Especially us budget folks!
