How many years or hours are LED lights good for? I'm in the market and can oy afford used lights. What do you all think is the life limits of an LED light?

Honestly, nobody really knows for each and every light.
Also the fact that LEDs can GRADUALLY fade it is impossible to even judge that.

And unlike a simple ballast/ bulb/ plug there are more lees self contained ( spread on PCB boards) electronics that can fail.
To be honest, the diodes themselves are the least likely failure point.

Power supplies 1st. Usually easily and cheaply replaceable. May mean minor diy surgery.

Drivers/fans/asst circuitry next.

Diode fade/ lens burn on high energy "blues", mostly violet to UV. Lenses usually cheap, diodes not so much.

Of course care and the history of how it was run matters as well.

Buying used of anything has inherent risks.
As much as people know I "like" LEDs I have more faith in the led itself than the " costing" that goes into the design. This is not only lighting btw. I'm very seen people throw out expensive electronics based on a few sub$ component failures

Point is I'd personally weigh used vs cheaper than premium (with likely compromises) new products. The used better be at a significant discount. :)

This is more a philosophy than fact and one of the reasons I went diy for my fw lighting

Like the ai prime lens melt most of the failures are not on purpose.

Most are actually fixable fairly easily and cheaply BUT that is another matter.

Oh I definitely agree with your philosophy. Way back in the day, I always preferred "retrofit kit."

@ MrFrag, Awesome, that means most quality LED lights will last a good while.

There are another factors in LED than diode longevity and fan and power supply and other hardware lifespan. Control is important too and with time the platform which LED control was based on is obsolete and you cannot switch to new system. I wonder if it is done on purpose? Nah, manufacturers would not be that unfriendly to customers.

I would buy from the Zon if I knew how to build from scratch like the early days of LED.

Oh controlability is definitely a cool factor as it let's you personalize the color ambiance of the tank. I remember back in the days where pages and pages of T5 combos where discussed and pictures posted.

Well bushdoc was probably referring to wifi dongles that are no longer made or other obsolete software.
In my case my example was when I bought my bluefish Mini and had to rely on their cloud service.
That service is now an add on you pay for.
Granted it took I think about 5 yrs to get to that point but at the time of purchase it was a concern of mine.

It definitely is an under explored issue.

Most would probably run the last uploaded schedule.

There are work around like salvaging the led boards and chucking the rest of the circuitry but that is somewhat complicated at times

I'm sure it can and many people do. I just don't want to spend $25 on a frag and hope it doesn't die or have to keep it all on the top shelf.

4 to 5 years is a pretty reasonable estimate for money calculations. Some will last longer, and some less. Less tech probably has less failures - most good diodes seem to last longer than wireless cards, boards and ever-getting-worse terrible apps.
