I really struggle with PE for most of my sticks. Great color, fast growth, limited mortality, but virtually no PE.

Here is a pic of my hairless Walt Disney. Got it at the last MACNA in Orlando a bit over 2 years ago. Was a healthy size 1.5" frag.

And whatever you do, don't tag @Charlie's Frags on this topic. He is very sensitive about PE.

If you want to see them shaggy, turn the return and flow pumps off for a while... they get hairy quick.

Hmmm. Got me thinking. In your build thread, didn't you say there is such a thing as too much flow? I could be mixing you up with somebody else.

Perhaps that is the source of my PE "shortage". I am careful about keeping flow as indirect as possible, but I run flow very hard. Just soft enough to keep most of the water in the tank. ;)

I will experiment and report back.

I do believe that you can have too much flow. Once you have a competent amount, more doesn't really matter. I totally understand that competent is hard to judged and determine, but a Tunze Wavebox and 2x 6105s on my 240g tank is more than enough. Some folks would put like 10x mp40s on that same tank and not have any better of results, IMO.

When the flow stops, the corals cannot respirate as well without water moving by and the polyps come out more to help with gas exchange. ...same as vendors who put them in perfectly still boxes to photo them. It is a trick and not sustainable or probably healthy, but it can be fun once in a while.

Here is some of mine. My past tank I could not keep sps but in this new one, they are doing the happy dance!! I'm so happy as well. These are all new corals. Goni and alveo also nice and full/flowy and the gsp looks like cousin it!

Got me thinking on flow now, I have a 21 gallon tank, 12x36x12, and barely any PE. I have 2xMP10, one on each end, running them 8 hours constant and 8 hours Reef crest opposite of each other. Mobius says it’s 1166 gph on reefcrest and 858 on constant. My return is a Neptune COR15 at 50%.
Tank has lots of flow, About what is everyone’s turnover with all that PE?
