Just for some personal education. I was wondering if keeping your lighting fixtures on during the cycling process actually aids in the cycling process? I would imagine it would help proliferate bacterial growth thus assisting in the cycling process. Anyway, would like some information from those of you in the know. Thanks.

Many hobbyist think that having the lights on during the cycle encourages algae growth or increases the severity of the initial algae blooms. I do not believe the denitrifying bacteria are autotrophic therefore light plays no part in colonization.

A lot of hobbyist do not run the lights at all during the cycle. I have done it both ways and neither ways made much of a difference.

If you grow algae in your tank, it can tie up nitrates. This really doesn't help it cycle faster. The bacteria are not photosynthetic.

I don't run lights during the cycle. I don't see any reason to. If you're using T-5's or metal halides, you will be starting the clock to purchase new bulbs sooner.
