Check out the possibilities at Lowpowerlab.com. It is based on a clone of the aurduino (Moteino), an inexpensive Linux based microcontroller. There are some projects on the site that involve a number of wireless devices - water level controls (a sump pump monitor), remote lighting controllers, notification sensors with text or email notification. All of the ingredients of the things we want in an aquarium controller. I am working some projects from this website, and hope to come up with a system to monitor water levels in a sump and some home automation as well. One of the features of this device is the efficiency and moderate cost of the hardware.
