I ordered a box of live sand and next day air apparently means 2 days to UPS. I travel work so it’s going to sit an additional 30 hours before I can get to it. How concerned should I be about its viability? I was so excited but now I’m a little worried. It’s not like it will sit out in extreme weather but I don’t want to sacrifice its freshness.

Tbs, I don’t want to put them on blast. It’s not about that
That wasn't my intention. I was thinking that tagging them might get you a better answer.

Everyone here at R2R knows that TBS is a great vendor to work with. Sounds like this is a carrier issue, so I don't take this like you're speaking badly about TBS.

With that in mind, I'm willing to bet this is not their first order that's been delayed by shipping. Maybe @LiverockRocks will be able to pop in here and offer some suggestions on how to best handle this.

I lieu of that, I don't think there's much you can do other than hope for the best. I'm not trying to be gross, but when you get your shipment I'd give the bag the sniff test. If it still smells fresh like a beach, you're in good shape. If it smells horrendous, you know that you had a lot of die off.

Good luck with your shipment!

They are saying we live remotely, I’m 65 minutes from the airport.

I’m gonna see if I can pick it up at a terminal somewhere closer to me tomorrow. I don’t want any of that goodness to suffer

I’m thinking worst case scenario I will make some water, I have a whole rack of empty 10 gallons in my fish room. Maybe fill one halfway, oxygenate it and have my wife just crudely dump the 20 pounds into then add to my display when I return a day and a half later from work

Good morning,

Live Sand is an excellent shipper and very hardy. It easily handles a 2-day delay and in cool weather even longer.

UPS related shipping snafus are not new. For these reasons, we focus on what can be done on our end.
  • Next Day Air - shipping method we select for all orders traveling outside Florida. We work through a business dashboard and on rare occations, UPS fastest route is 2-day. This is not our choice, but the only option provided to us by UPS.
  • Careful packaging - each order is packaged by the hands who harvest it, trust us -we want it to arrive in great condition.
  • Information - we send a heads-up email full of shipping details, because life is busy and it's easy to forget a shipment is coming.
  • Customer support - we monitor emails constantly (I responded to your email at 9pm) and do our best to address issues asap.
UPS related delays are becoming more frequent, so our emails mention that a day delay or 2-day lags happen. *If we know a customer is taking off work to receive a shipment, we advise them not to take the day off - the product can wait. Luck has it when someone takes the day off, then their shipment is delayed.
*If we know a customer is traveling the day after an eta, we make arrangements to ship on a different date. Because inevitably, their shipment will be delayed for some reason.

Rock on.

This is an excellent plan. If you have a spare powerhead or air stone, add that to the holding tank.

I didn’t want to name tbs, Wen has been incredibly patient with me. I was a bit flustered but shown a ton of grace and good customer service. Im more excited about this box than any amount of fish or corals I’ve ever received.
UPS has been hard to communicate with, sticking to prompts, lying and blaming them.

Can anyone weigh in, could I get away with temporarily holding the sand in a 10 gallon, is that not enough of a foot print for 20 pounds of sand. Or should I go up to a 20 long?

If you have the option, use the 20 long for sure.

It may be ok depending on where you are. Certain things might not be ok, but in live sand there are all kinds of Eggs and larvae, and they will likely survive just fine, so will the bacteria.

UPS completely sucks. They've lost like 3 things on me in the past couple months and I had a 550 dollar box of coral over 24 hours late when overnight was paid for. They lived, but I can't describe what I want to do. UPS needs to be either gutted of all the slugs that work there or dismantled as it is not a viable courier anymore. It's a joke.
