I got a chainlink eel about a year ago, he passed away today. He had been doing so well, he was always "out." He went from fine and eating to lying on his side gasping until I had to step in.

I am going to get another one, but I want to keep him healthy. I HATE losing any of these guys.

I had a Golden Dwarf Moray for several years. I always let him tell me when he was hungry. If he was out and active at feeding time, I fed him. This guy was ALWAYS out at feeding time. He actually tried to pull a clam out of my puffer's mouth which resulted in a torn lip. I usually made sure he got a small piece of food as long as he was out. Did I overfeed him??

As far as food, I fed him a variety. Fish, squid, cockles (clams). What do the primarily eat?

No I dont think you overfed him (unless you saw huge bulges in it). What is your water and oxygen levels at?

The parameters are fine. All the other fish in the tank are doing well. I don't monitor oxygen, but PH is 8.1. Nitrates are around 25. My lionfish would be the first to show problems with water.

What should I feed him? I know they aren't fish eaters primarily, but he happily ate it. I also fed cockles, squid, shrimp. With the eels, if they don't want to eat, they don't eat. That's always better my understanding

I have no personal experience with eels, but I have read that they are particularly fond of oxygenation, and I have been to Hawaii and interacted with them in person and they tend to hang in the highly oxygenated zones underneath the surge. So maybe more surface agitation? Again I have no personal experience so somebody with experience should fact check me :)
