@Randy Holmes-Farley

Hi Randy,

I am hoping this is a quick question and answer, might have been answered somewhere that I couldn't find but maybe there is another solution to my personal issue....

So like many others I am dealing with low PH due to 3 mouth breathers in a small basement apartment. We live in Canada and @ -27 without windchill the door or window open is not an option without costing a fortune in heating or getting sick. My alk is fine if not high @ 4-5 mg/l, Cal is @ 500 and water changes are done weekly but, I cannot get my PH up and it's almost unreadable @ 7.7-7.8 or maybe less.

Here's what I am thinking but my worry is that am I really only adding surface agitation and a mess or will this work? I am thinking to place my air stone pump from my freshwater tank right up to a small window somewhat near the tanks and crack the window open so the air inlet of pump is at the incoming air. Then I would run the air tubing across to the tanks and split it so my freshwater tank which has an airstone in it now has fresh air and then add an air stone maybe near my circ pump or return outlet from canister filter so that it circulates the air bubbles as much as possible before they get to the surface and pop... then I hope that the popped air bubble will also distribute a little more O2 at the surface water so it disolves into the tank again before rising into the apartment (obviously there will be a fair amount that just ends up in our air).

Will this work? Is this really my only solution besides buying some sort of protein skimmer and hooking an airline to that and then to the outside? I guess I can always try idea A first then resort to protein skimmer option after if it doesn't work as the airline to outside would already be there...

Any help would be amazing as my corals aren't really growing or flourishing.

Thanks

Popping air bubbles do tend to cause a mess, and is a main reason that aren't used as much in reef tanks.

Outside air is good, but usually folks run it into a skimmer. CO2 scrubbers to a skimmer often are used as well. Even then the effect may not be enough since it continues to fight against tank top aeration with the high CO2 air.

Makes sense... I will try the airstone since I have the required supplies and if I am just fighting the c02 still then I will either revisit it or just figure out how to get a lot more outside air into apt and give us all some much needed fresh air.

Thanks for the help

Harley, look into Notafeesh 2 part. If your into making your own, Randy also has a mixture. I couldn’t be happier with Notafeeah 2 part. PH no longer an issue.
