Lowes buckets

I like the Lowes buckets - mostly for the color. I know they are not food grade and are not recommended for storing salt water. But does anyone know if it'd be ok to store dry salt in them? I ordered RedSea Coral Pro in "sacks" (basically heavy duty garbage bags.) It'd be nicer to store them in a bucket instead and I happen to have a couple of brand new Lowes buckets.

I've been using a mix of HD and Lowes buckets for mixing and storing saltwater for years. Sure they're not food grade but not being recommended for storing saltwater is news to me.

I have poured bags of salt in them for years, and never given it a second thought.

Also, If you find one of these kitchen colanders that fit right inside, you can use it to gently raise and lower fish-- i.e., transfer them without a net.

I’ve always used the buckets as well. Cool idea here too!

Ok glad to hear all that! I simply assumed that not food grade was not good for keeping salt water and such, but since nobody else has issues, it's what I'll be doing! Thanks!

I recall being told that the orange Home Depot buckets had a propensity to leech dye into RODI water, and have tried to stick to white buckets since…

I haven’t actually tested this claim, mind you... it just seemed to make sense that the super cheap buckets may not be ideal for holding what is effectively potable water!

That's basically what I was concerned about with the blue Lowe's buckets. I just like the blue buckets!

Well, leave one full of RODI water for a few days (a new one might show the effect better than an old one), then pour it out into a clean white bucket to look for a blue tint in the water!

Been using them for many years with no issue. I use them for water changes and storing water sometimes.

Come to think of it, other than a quick mixing, I do think the buckets I use to store any water for a time are the white buckets salt itself was sold in (e.g., Instant Ocean), so @UncommonSense may be making Commonsense!
