Quick history of tank. About 1 year old
125g 40breeder sump. Kessil lighting
Octopus skimmer, purple sand from a beach in ca.
So today while doing my biweekly water change and maintenance. I dropped my IM feeder in tank. It landed on sand and when I pulled it out my purple sand was stuck to it.
The purple in my sand is made of Maganese garnet. I have had no adverse side effects from using this sand but the fact that it is magnetic has me little worried, and a little excited. I am thinking of slowly taking all the sand out of my tanks and running a magnet through it to pull all of the purple out. This would allow me to remove my silicate based sand for the right type then I could put the purple back in. I would appreciate and explanation of why it's magnetic. And Opinions on my idea. What I don't want is to be told how bad it could be for using silicate based sand, I already know and have read every thread on that on the Internet. Now if there is info on Maganese garnet being bad I would like to hear that. Thank you. Here is a picture.
