Making a neptune Dos Silent- DiY

3d printer use stepper motors to drive the print head. These original printers were loud and whiny (like the dos). The printers drivers can be easily swapped to newer technology drivers that make the printers mostly silent.

The Dos is two stepper motors controlled by a micro processor and has a DRV88825 stepper driver chip for each motor. Has anyone swapped this chip for a TCM2225 or TCM2226 chip? They are the same form factor, the newer drivers result in silent motor operation.

I am not an electrical engineer, but have tinkered plenty with electronics and 3d printer configurations. i haven't mapped out the pins, capacitors etc from the board, but it looks like it could be doable with hot air torch and some time.

Big tree tech has a plug and play option for 3d printers. I have a dos coming from ebay that i will explore further.

I haven’t tried this, but got the DŌS QD instead. It is silent.
 
One of my DOS motors failed recently, and I had the same thought about silent drivers. Gen 1 DOS is spectacularly loud. It's too bad the driver chips don't plug in like they do in 3D printer control boards. Following along.

It would make for a fun DIY project to build a DOS from a neglected 3D printer.

For anyone with a dead motor, the stepper motors can be replaced with $20 42mm x 60mm Nema 17 units from Amazon. Works great after calibration. I just needed to shorten the length of the drive shaft.
