Making frag plugs

What type of ceramic do most of you all use to make frag plugs? Because 7 dollars for 15 is pricey when i frag almost weekly....i could get another chalice after 2 months:tongue:...

Also where can you buy the ceramic to make the plugs?

Make your own, get a bag of Type II concrete and Play sand from Lowes, 4sand:1concrete .

Then just cure the plugs for a couple weeks. I have made over 100 and have not put a dent in the bag of concrete. It might take you a couple times to get your mixture right.

I had a thread that went through the process step by step but all the pictures are broken. I will have to find all the pics.

i make my own frag plus out of live rock.......just grab yourself a chunk of live rock and put it on a wet-saw and cut it into slices..........they look natural and no need to cure them...after you slice them they are ready to go....

I dont own a wet tile saw...but am considering getting one...........could a dremel cut a about inch thick branch of rock?

Dremel would be to tedious.. wet tile saw at HF is like 60 bones.

I keep my tile saw locked up in my whip!

I use sea shells. I filled a five gallon bucket with them at the beach this year. They look quite a bit more natural epoxied to the rock than your typical frag plug (*cough* ORA *cough* *cough*).

I don't know where you are getting your plugs but there are a lot of economy based options. We make Micro Plugs 100 for $15. Plugs $15 for 50. Stemmed disks $11 for 25, $20 for 50, Premium Plug $15 for 12. We also make basic disks. Packed in bulk. 1.5" disks $52.50 for 250. 2" disks $30 for 125. All ceramic. Shipping $10 regardless of volume.

Sure you can probably make them for less but honestly wouldn't you rather play in the water and let someone else get dirty.

You can make your own fairly easily.

Fill a Plastic mixing container with sculpting sand. Came pre-moistened to perfect consistency.
They sell the plastic mixing containers with the concrete mix at Lowes and HomeDepot.

If your sand is dry, wet it so you can squeeze it and it keeps shape.

Next push your mold into the sand.

Now you are ready to make concrete.

3 parts sand

1 part Type I/II Portland Cement.

and a little water

The concrete will be a gray color when mixing but if you use white reef sand it will dry a little lighter. They do make white cement but it has to be special ordered.

I mixed it pretty watery so it takes to the mold better. Especially when making frag plugs with the bottom peg to fit egg crate.

Let it dry in the mold for about 24 hours and pull them out for a few days of air drying.

Dont forget to put them in water for 3-4 weeks to bring PH down before using them.
