I recall recently reading on R2R (can't find it now) that some reefers who used Liferock and/or Real Reef Rock noticed that coralline & other encrusting organisms wouldn't grow on them. Is that a thing? I can't believe that if it's an issue it isn't more widely reported.

I read the same thing after purchasing caribaea liferock. I was concerned, but a couple months into my tank and I'm already seeing purple coralline on the rock.

I haven't researched but wouldn't buy painted rock. You want your rock as porous as possible.

Here’s a piece of Real Reef Branch Rock covered in Coraline algae from my aquarium. I also have regular Real Reef Rock in my aquarium covered in Coralne algae.

The worst part about that stuff in my opinion (other than not having any life on it upon purchase) is its overall lack of porosity. I broke some of the caribsea stuff in half and its as solid as a block of concrete.

I have a weird combo of rocks to consider. My existing VidaRocks, which are very porous ceramic, plus I need more rock of some kind to complete the aquascape. I was hoping that porosity was already taken care of.

Real reef rock instead of "real" reef rock imo

But Mr. Hyde, sir - what about the damnable hitchhikers?
No hitchhikers outweigh the benefit of diversity imo
