Hey!

New to the hobby. Started with a small 24g AIO and quickly upgraded. I just set up my Eshopps Mariner 70.

70 gallon display + 25g sump

EQUIPMENT:
AI Hydra 32 x2
Simplicity DC 120 skimmer
Sicce syncra return pump
AI Nero 3 x2

FISH:
2 clowns
1 prawn goby
1 pink streak wrasse
1 geometric Pygmy hawkfish
1 clown goby

CORAL:
HG torch
Gold torch
Green torch
Dragon soul torch
Utter chaos zoa
Magician zoa
Stratosphere zoa
Acan x2
Various mushrooms
Scoly

Hoping to get more fish and a fair amount of SPS. I got mostly cured rock from my LFS and brought some rock from my old tank. So far so good.

I am waiting for a captive bred flame angel to QT then I will be adding it to tank. How many of my LPS can I expect to lose? How can I mitigate this? They’re just so pretty I decided to roll the dice.

I think it’s hit or miss of course I don’t have lps my tank is an all sps system but I have a coral beauty and flame angel and never had a nipping issue.. however I also have an auto feeder that feeds 3 times a day so I know the fish arnt hungry so that may have something to do with it

Following! We have an 180 Mariner, so I always love seeing what people do with these tanks!

Keep that Flame Angel busy, mine loves going in and out of aqua scape, and it is a hunter like a mandrin goby. Lots of ecological elements to bolster the biodiversity, and use the ecological principal of succession. Get pods, or pioneering species of life that contribute to what’s needed to support more life as things progress. And keep that flame Angel well fed. I’m 3 for 3 without ever seeing one nip a coral.

BTW, I’m a cactus and succulent lover. My grandparents were in a cactus/succulent society near the Bay Area in Cali. Their neighbor had hundreds, grew them from seed. What a talent! I couldn’t believe when I found out my grandma had a Peyote button. She’s not the type for tripping or cultural rituals some use them for, but I find it hilarious there was one in the mix of all those other cacti! 🤣🌵.

Sounds like a plan. So far so good. It is constantly grazing and has not shown an interest in any coral. I’m also transitioning to mostly SPS so I think at least that should be safe.

Awesome! I know a few growers in the Bay Area. Plants have definitely been a gateway hobby for me into reefing. Though I still grow a ton of plants.

I’ve been giving plants away. Too many other things to keep up with. But in my most recent horticultural endeavors, I presoaked Cryptomeria seeds for 24 hrs in water. Now they’re in the fridge to cold stratify with lightly soaked perlite. Maybe when I’m ready to sow them in soil, I might try putting a scratch on the seed and hope for the best. This is my 5th attempt to germinate The Japanese Red Cedar. And I think I’m going to try a few in coco coir pellets, and only use a misting spray bottle to dampen them in. 🤞

Updates:

I got a fairy wrasse and a flasher wrasse. All fish and coral seem quite happy in the new tank. Currently have the expected new tank diatoms but the CuC is handling that. I had to get rid of the clown goby since it was nipping at my acros.

I’ve also added a few pounds of live rock from Gulf Live Rock to try and diversify my biome. I turned off my skimmer as well since my nitrates and phosphates are bottoming out. I started feeding a lot more and they’re starting to come up.

So far I am loving the new setup!

Good luck! Most of my plant experience is with carnivorous plants. They are very fun to grow!
