Material for frag rack

The only leaching I've heard of with the egg crate was with the black egg crate stuff.

I've read many threads that said the opposite.

I made many, many frag racks with the balck material, for friends and never had a complaint.

The law requires recycled plastics and urethanes to be black. Enough said?

Meaning it can vary anytime.

I built this with some 1/4' acrylic from Lowes and some threaded nylon rod and nuts that i got from Mcmaster-carr. I built this to fit nicly in a 20 high while leaving a bit of room around it on the bottom glass. This also filled out a 10 gallon tank perfectly. It was super easy, no leaching from the white eggrate and fully customizable, and cheap especially when compared to those found at Blue Glow.

NICELY DONE! And great thinking on your feet! I may be doing the same soon. I built one small rack this way but I pressed acrylic rod in holes and supper glued them. I think I may build it that way. Thanks for the incentive to "get it done".

My egg crate is ok and cheap but is a PITA, and moves around too easily.

Are you looking for someone to say your right? Not all black plastic is recycled. But thanks for your input I'm sure it will be taken into consideration.

Am not looking for anyone to certify what I said.

It is true not all black plastic is recycled. However recycled plastic is required to be black. This point is of interest in reef tanking. One has to consider any supply of black plastic may not be of a purity one would want to use in a reef tank. Many black plastic products are of recycled materials, because it is much less expensive and is readily available. IMO, I am not going to use it.

Done.. and.. guys.. in fact on review of my notes, I'm not sure that actually is a law that they have to be black either. It may of just been a trade safety margin. But, I think you will find most recycled plastics are black, and it may be voluntary.

So, I'd like to totally amend the whole mess. I'm leaving it like I last edited it, because we all make mistakes and I'm not too good to admit I make them too.

BTW, I have mellowed over the years. There was a time you would of never gotten me to admit to a mistake in public. But at this age I think it is good to set a better example than I would of then.

SO let me steer this back onto course here. There was a complaint about the alge buildup on the eggcrate/light rack...wouldnt you be seeing the same issue on the acrylic?

no, acrylic dosent have the same properties, it stays much cleaner than the eggcrate, whether its a chemical composition / leeching issue or not im not 100% sure. Also its 100% aquarium safe, i mean we build tanks out of it so your 100% in the clear no doubt. Thats what I like about it, I dont have to wonder and in this hobby one less thing to worry about is nice.

Agreed. Acrylic is where its at!! They look much cleaner, don't get the algae buildup, and you know they're safe.

I would disagree a little, I have an egg crate frag rack in my sump and acrylic baffles, and I clean my baffles twice as often as my frag rack (fwiw) ;)

are your baffles and eggcrate frag rack erve the same function? Are they oriented in the same position in the sump?(i.e.: vert vs horiz)? How about location in the sump?


a frag rack is suspended in the water not dividing the water. there is a different flow over the baffles that may cause more build up and therefore more cleaning.
