Reefers, I am looking to buy the above reactor used from a fellow reefer. I have never used an equipment like this.

What are the things I need to check in this equipment before I make the purchase??

Since he is no longer using the equipment I cant see it functioning. Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

I have used one for years. It is hard to say what you will need without seeing what the actual piece looks like. But it should be the same as the picture but all pieces can be replaced if missing one or two. This inside is just a tube, sponge disks and a outlet strainer to cover the outlet port. The pumps included with the unit area good quality dry pumps so that should be working. All the tubing joints pich valve can be replaced in not with unit.

There are 2 sizes I use the smaller one. Setup is easy takes a few weeks weeks the kickin. but it also depends on your trate load.

@ Tab28 - Thanks for the information. Can you tell me how has your experience been with the unit so far. And do you mind if I bug you on how to use it? I would like to know the first five basic steps to start the unit.

I got my midwest sulphur denitrator and want to use it. A friend of my lent me some sulphur media mixed with araognite. I have two questions.

1. Can I use sulphur mixed with arognite or do I need to use pure sulphur

2. If I use sulphur mixed with arognite do I need to put a layer of arognite on the top of sulphur to buffer the PH?

I set up the reactor with 1/3rd caribsea sulphur and 2/3 coarse arm media. I put 75ml microbacter to give a kick start to the bacterial population.

Day1: - Reactor ran full blast with in and out full open

Day2: - 1 drop per second

Update:

The reactor sprung a leak. So it took me a day to fix it.

Started it again @ 1 drop/second.

After three days tested the tank water - 15ppm nitrates - Used lamotte nitrate test kit.
I wish I had the lamotte nitrate kit before I started the nitrate reactor. This kit is awesome no confusion with color anymore.

Increased the rate of flow after three days to 100 drops /min >> 1.6 drops / second.

I will let it run like this for about 3 more days and check again.

Tested the effluent today - 0 Nitrate

Tested tank water - 8-10 nitrates

I am hoping the tank water goes down in nitrates slowly in the next two weeks.
