Milliepora Polyps

I just wonder why are the Polyps of these 2 millies difference?
First pic short or smaller Polyps and second longer Polyps.
I know they are different kind.

They are both millipora.

Polyp extension can be due to a number of factors, nutrients, flow, lighting etc. Though variate, tell-tale millipora “Long polyps” do not always extend fully for the previously stated reasons and more.

I agree. Neither of them have the proper corallite structure. MAYBE the first one could be, but it’s a long shot. Millepora radial corallites are very compact and close together, and very uniform in shape, usually looking like a half cup shape. The axial corallites are tubular, which is what makes me think the first one is also not a millepora.

The first ones definitely not a mille. The second is to tiny of a nub to give a real good guess.

I’ll admit, 6 years of sps keeping and I still cannot tell the subtle differences between Millies and the several others that look just like them. Fairly certain most of what I’ve been sold as Millies aren’t even millies. It would be helpful if there was some sort of pictorial guide to distinguish similar looking acros mike Millie, prostrata, spathulata, ect. I’m sure there’s a dozen other species easily confused with each other in this group

Corals often differ a lot in tanks. I hade a "Hobby Acropora expert" at home that couldnt identify a Bali green slimer just because i had it in strong light so the tips was growing outwards and downwards. On the tips and 1 inch more it was yellow. Low nutrition - strong led light.

The yellow birdsnest can be brown, yellow or even offwhite depending on light. It can grow with 0,5 or 2,5 inch between the branching. It can grow vertically in medium light or horisontally in strong light.
