Miracle Mud Issue, Please Help!!

After putting Miracle mud in one of my 4 chambers behind the tank about 4 or 5 days ago, it left residue floating on the top of my tank that'a annoying me. What is the best way to remove the residue so I can have a crystal clear tank again !?

What does your set up look like? Normally there is a surface skimmer that pulls film off on the surface. A picture would be helpful.

I'm not home at the moment but when I get home I'll send you one, I don't have a surface skimmer, but I do have a protein skimmer

did you put a layer over sand over the miracle mud when you set it in there?

Yes, I did. It still kicked up a bit, I put a bag over it like the direction said to. The residue I have on my surface isn't a lot but it just annoying me and I want to remove it.

You are going to need some sort of surface skimmer regardless. A film will build up in the same way that dust collects on a shelf. A surface skimmer is very different from a protein skimmer. Overflow boxes on reef ready tanks act as a surface skimmer. They pull water off of the surface and mix it in with the rest.

Hi! I also just added miracle mud to my refugium after one lfs recommended it and one said "don't do it!". I honestly saw more benefit to my end goal with it verses with out it. But I took into consideration the issue my nay-sayer with it. His biggest problem was the film, he said it turned the water in his DT black and it took him forever to get rid of it.

So before I added it to my HOB sump/fuge, I actually did a double SW rinse and soak using a turkey baster to suck a d remove the dark water. Then I added the wet mud to the bottom of the sump, put my LR over it after I partially buried my mangrove roots and then added my chaeto/algae mix. I then slowly added my SW to the sump and let it settle for about an hour. Once I started things up I had zero film. Things went so well I decided to add to my larger tanks ruge. This was a bit more complicated as I did experience more of that film. So I ended up running my skimmer pretty wet for about 36-48 hrs and eventually all the film either settled or was skimmed out.

If you havent already tried to run your skimmer wet, try doing that.

Paper towel, lay it on top of the water.
and point the powerheads up and stir it back into the water.
what skimmer do you have?
you can fashion a surface skimmer by putting the pump in a cup and letting it overflow into the cup. works for aquaclears too.
