This is what Ive tried, aswell as what Ive told my friends to try. Images look alot cleaner is about it, but it takes to much time, and saving it a PITA...

Take a base image, paste the second image over it(by taking and using the normal layering mode), and take and set the opacity of the newly stacked layer to 50%, then flatten the image and save it as a new file.

There is a down fall to this though, you can only stack 2 images at once, when you want to stack more, you have to take and save it, then add more to it, or atleast, that is how I understand it!
