Is it possible to mount multiple frags of the same coral together? Will they grow into each other and encrust together or is this a crazy idea?

This is done all the time. They will grow together.

Yes, once in a while I'll be vacuuming the tank and break a branch off. Put a dab of glue at the end and attach right onto the base. You'll never know it happened a week later!
