I'm moving my tank to a different location in the house. New location is in a room where we spend more time and has less direct sunlight. Hopefully a win win.

I'm considering changing to (rinsed until clear) sand from barebottom, switching out the aquqclear hob for a seachem tidal, and possibly painting the back.

What do y'all think, what pitfalls should I watch out for?

Sounds like a solid plan. If you keep all the rock in a bin or tub with a heater and circulation, you should be able to just insta-cycle your tank (even with new substrate and water, if you opt to go that route).

Looking back to your reefing roots: Did you start with Instant Ocean salt?
