MP, worth it?

Well, I guess now that I'm starting to get into sps sticks, I should consider buying an mp pump for my tank. I just wanted to make sure it was worth spending the money for the upgrade. Money is kind of tight, so I'd have to sell one of my main corals just to get it. Is the performance that much of a difference to justify the money? An mp10 should be enough for a 36 gallon but down the line I'd like to upgrade to a 65 gallon tank. What size should I go with in case I upgrade. I don't want to have to go out and buy another after an upgrade. Please lmk and thanks in advance, Frank.

If it were me, I would just skip the mp-10 and get the mp-40, that way yopu can use it later on with the larger tank.

get a used mp20 if possible. you can use it for now and later on for a 65gal tank. when you wanna go even bigger tank, you can still upgrade it to a mp40 for a small cost.

So it is worth it? And I thought mp20 were discontinued? I haven't seen them for sale, even used. I think the mp40 would be overkill on my 36 gallon, no?

+1 on the MP40. You can set the maximum speed of the pump across each mode allowing you to turn it down for the 36, but boost it once your upgrade.

Shoot, I didn't figure an mp40 into my budget. Maybe I can get a used one for less but those things are almost expensive as my current set-up. By the time I get all the equipment for successful sps keeping, I might not have any corals left to populate the tank. :sad: Thanks for the answers guys.

The MP40s are the bomb. I owned 2 and recently sold since we took down our tank.

Ill never find it in my budget to spend the big cash on a MP-40. No way im spending that much on a powerhead. Ill stick with my poor man budget korilias on wavemaker with my RKL. :)

You can fine a used MP40w es for less then 300 some times. If you want to upgrade save a few more weeks for the mp40 it will be worth it.

What about buying a single MP10 now with the ecosmart drive now, and down the road when you upgrade, add a second MP10 with the ecosmart. In my understanding these things work great in pairs, and I thought part of why the MP20 was discontinued was because there was no significant water movement between it and the MP10s?

That's a very good point. You can put the ecosmart wireless pumps in slave mode where when one ramps up, the other ramps down. It will help create random flow in your tank. I run two MP40s and two MP10s on my 180 and there's constant changes in movement with them set up like this.

That sounds like a good idea. Still, it would be over $500 when all is said and done. If I can find a mp 40 for 300 I might go that route just to save the money

If you get one you will kick yourself for not already having one!! I got a mp40w on craigslist for 200, the deals are out there, just have to look hard!! Good luck
