I've had both....running Tunze's again. The noise is just too much to handle with the Vortechs. My idea of a perfect reef is a peaceful and silent reef, without the winding noise of pumps ramping up and down.

Both are good pumps, but my personal pref is for the Tunzes. I dont see a tangible advantage to having the motor coupled through the glass... in fact, I see disadvantages from it with little to no advantage. At that, while they may not be as large, the Hydor pumps are good ones as well.

i really think it boils down to just personal preference in a way, not which is better per say.

Tunze is silent, and for the most part more reliable
Vortech takes up less room "In tank" and are a more powerful pump

like in my 55 i like the mp for flow and space, but in my 180 i like the tunzes go figure lol
