being a chalice noobie should i put them on the sandbed or on a rock on the sandbed. Now they are both on rocks

Depends on what kind of lighting you are using. Both of those should be able to handle a decent (medium) amount of light though. As far as chalices go anyway.

low in the tank on the rocks. I found that debris tends to irritate my chalices so you dont want sand blowing on them
 
+1 you want them on a rock or something to keep them up off the sand just a little at the least, some people use small pieces of PVC pipe in the sand to hold their chalices up just enough to keep the sand from causing any damage. I have seen some good colonies that ended up dieing off bc of a little sand n it starting a slow tissue necrosis type reaction and they just dwindled away.
