Hello and thank you for looking at my tank build! It will not be super technical, as I am learning as I go. This is not to be taken as "not prepared" however!

I started planning for a saltwater tank 10 years ago, then I ended up divorced, broke, and nomadic! Not a good way to start a tank. Fast forward to 2015 when I found my saltwater tank books. I read and researched until fall 2015 when I bought my first round of supplies...Radion Gen 3s, Vortech pump and powerhead, skimmer. I also have a Gyre 150. 20150926_192417.jpg

Much to my new hubby's dismay! Then my dad helped build the stand, which if we ever have a tornado, is where I will be hiding! Finished it with trim and paint to match the living room. Wanted the opening in front as big as possible so we made the whole middle section a door with a decorative hidden seam. I have handles too, they have just not made it on yet! 20150926_101619.jpg 20151004_185750.jpg
Then there was some waiting....which was TORTURE! 20151018_153637.jpg
and the plumbing...I am not a plumber, this is my first sump, this took forever for me to figure out! There was A LOT more waiting.
20151104_212714.jpg

And FINALLY some fun with the rocks! 20151107_094058.jpg I wanted something super stable so I built these as 3 individual structures with dry rock from LFS and the Tonga flat rock from BRS. I set it all up on a folding table the same dimensions of my tank to make sure it would fit. The test was to shake the table...when it was stacked so nothing fell or shifted I glued it with Ecotech coral glue. Super technical. :)

And that is the story of the beginning of my first fish tank! Go big or go home is my moto! I am going on 8 months and so far so good, no major issues...yet. I will throw in a few early pics but I need to be able to update this so I won't go crazy. I LOVE my tank, I am super OCD about it (I spend more time with the tank then the hubby) :D;) I would love comments, critiques, ideas...I want to learn! Thanks! 20160122_120833.jpg

There is nothing like starting your own tank to force you to learn new things. And some mistakes you make you just can't change. Good luck. I started mine about the same time, but don't have a sump. I like the shelfs in the rockwork, something I wish I had done.

Thank you! I was going for a little different. I have more in there than I wanted but I LOVED the pieces from BRS so I wanted to use everything I could! Guess I need a bigger tank!! :D

Ok so here is my weekly update! I am an uber nerd so I kept a log of all my activity and water parameters...basically anything and everything that happened in my tank. I am a bit behind on it now that things are more settled and I feel more comfotable. I made the decision to get a captive cloned RBTA at about 4 months in... 20160207_120809.jpg

She was 8 inches across when I got her. Most beautiful thing EVER! I know the rule is 6 months at least but my thought was get her in and find her spot before I loaded more corals. This was in Feb and as of today she and her little clone are happily situated. 20160410_194925.jpg Ruby Nem and my clown female Persephone. 20160530_141919.jpg Here is Ruby and the clone...Medusa, with Percy and Persephone. This was in April and they are still happy and healthy! Cannot stress consistant husbandry enough!

Update time! Had some issues with algae growth but some trochus snail took care of that...added an urchin, which while keeping the tank clean has become a challenge. 20160602_215003.jpg 20160425_213751.jpg 20160323_112718.jpg
Currently Herman is wearing a favia frag I got from Saltyunderground as his fancy hat...however all the green algae is gone. I also added an Engineer goby around the same time...I like challenges! Fortunately, with the way my rock structure is built, he causes no major issues! 20160618_131403.jpg 20160618_131355.jpg
Prometheous is a tad shy, so this is the best I ever get. Does a fabulous job of turning sand however!! Ok that is all for now...

Ok so my update this week is just to say, I give up on Zoas and Palys! They just are too depressing to watch...the unexpected "melting" is just, well, depressing.:( On a happier note, recently got some mini-maxi nems...which are beautiful! 20160701_105909.jpg 20160701_105909.jpg 20160701_105922.jpg 20160701_105941.jpg sorry for the less than stellar pictures!

Wow great tank. Excited to see where this goes. I love how clean the sump area looks. Do you have a refugium in the empty space now?
Thanks! I have not done a refugium, I am kind of torn on the idea! I too like how clean my sump is!! I will be adding a mandarin pair so I am considering it!

Your tank looks great, and the water parameters must be very good because everything is thriving, this is a testament to the care taker!
Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing with us.

Thank you for the kind words! It is a labor of love! We don't have children so my dogs and my tank are my babies....I have lots of time to fuss over it. I am waiting for the major disaster...I have made many small oops-es so far!!

Tank looks great and healthy! I don't see any unhealthy zoas or palys when I zoom in, everything looks fat and healthy!

That is why I get so frustrated!! A lot of the ones I have do well...however...for example my beautiful Petroglyphs are now a little mat of nothing and 3-4 days ago they were fat and healthy and loving life. I cannot figure out what happens. So so sad!:mad:eek:_O

Tank looks great. Good job. It seems like every tank has that one type of coral that doesn't do well. For me it is yuma mushrooms. I love them when I buy them and then I watch them melt away. I noticed there was 1 heater in the equipment pic. IMO I would consider 2 under powered heaters in case 1 gets stuck in the on position. My buddy just lost a tank that way. Well anyway....looks great.

Thank you! I have read that in several posts...I just feel like an idiot that my nemesis is palys! Haha I was going to do 2 heaters, I had a guy all lined up to help me with set up and that was our plan. Then he got out of the business, leaving me on my own and the place I got all my equipment from talked me out of it. That is a great reminder!
