I’m setting up my first FOWLR, looking at starting with Clownfish and a few other small fish (any recommendations on breeds and aquascaping? Once my tank has matured I want to start playing with soft corals and anemone.)

This is what I’ve got to start the first cycle before looking at fish:

55 gallon tank

(Not ideal, this was my brackish tank for a few years. If this goes well, I will be tripling the size and adding a high quality sump system.)

20 lbs live sand, 20 lbs dry

20 pounds dry rock, 20 pounds live

(I’m going to expoxy some rock together, but make sure nothing is too big to safely remove. I’ll be adding more once it al arrives and I see how what I currently have looks and covers my tank.)

Aqua Clear 70 HOB filter

Aqua tech 30-60g HOB filter

(Do I need both or just the Aqua Clear going on what my protein skimmer puts out?)

Macro Aqua M-50 Mini Hang-on

External Protein Skimmer, 60 Gallon- puts out 238gph

(Do you recommend two separate protein skimmers on a 55 and alternating cleaning days for smoothest running?)

Tetra 200 watt automatic submersible heater

(Am I good to stick with this one for now and upgrade to a heater with controls down the road? Is it better to do one large heater or two small? For a beginner reeftank with clownfish and other easy fish, how many total watts should I aim for in heating a 55g?)

Ocean Revive Arctic T247 48” LED

(I’m just super excited about these)

I’ve also got a digital aquarium thermometer, refractometer, TSD meter, nitrifying bacteria, Dr Tim’s Ammonia, and a master test kit. Is there anything else I should have on hand or be adding to my water? (I’ve seen some things about adding calcium, I need to research that further.)0

BSI IC Gel, Instant Ocean Coral Epoxy, and BSI accelator for attaching dry rock- any extra tips on that?

Pic is of tank currently, water and rock is coming out today for a vinegar clean and refill with RODI!

A 55 is a fantastic tank to start with

The filters aren't as important as the skimmer. Bit running them as long as you do proper maintenance is fine

Sounds like a great start

Welcome aboard!

I plan on doing a weekly testing 10% water change, I’m very vigilant on proper maintenance :)
