My GFO disaster

interesting. personally, i have good results with using RowaPhos after rinsing and avoid getting my tank a coffee color if i didn't rinse it.
Agreed, I'd NEVER not rinse it, the rinsed water is GROSS, and a deep rust color.

I’d rinse any GFO no matter how you use it. There’s no harm is running some water through it in a mesh bag.

Maybe I’m relying too much on my local fish store guy who is a big believer in phosphates being .03 I’ve been fighting to get them down from .7 for a while. I’m fairly new with corals and you know you’re kind of right because as soon as I started Chasing phosphates, I lost an alveopora three small Zoa frags and a goniopora I’m starting to wonder if I’m doing more harm than good. It’s very frustrating. I was using phos guard in a reactor. And changing it every four days per sea chem instructions and plateaued at .2. so I added GFO.
IMO Corals hate GFO. I've never killed a coral from high phosphate but I've killed several from dropping phosphate too quickly...

I know , I’m starting to have second thoughts about adding it into my tank things were going good until I started chasing numbers

CRAFTSMAN CMXEVBE17678 1.75 Peak HP Wet Dry Vac Powerhead, Portable Shop Vacuum Compatible with a 5 Gallon Bucket (Sold Separately) with Filter Bag and Hose...

I use this to clean my sump. $35.00 at Home Depot, plus a 5 gallon bucket if you don’t have. I have never seen a reefer with out a 5 gallon bucket!
This,
I have a bucket buddy from home depot looks just like this and bought the 20 dollar box of attachments they have which the long narrow crevice tool works the best. You have to have a plan going in as it fills up quick but has a switch so it stops at 3.5 gallons every time then you empty the bucket and go again till done. Keep track of how many 3.5 gallon amounts you dumped and add that amount of fresh mixed saltwater back in. If you have an ATO make sure you shut it off when sucking water out of your sump then be sure and turn it back on when finished.
