My self induced cyanobacterial bloom

Yeah, Chemi-free is the way for me! :) keep in mind this was an intentional bloom and not a regular problem for me since i have started the build. Purely educational. :D

I will try upping the wattage, going to town tomorrow for dinner so i will see what they have in stock. My luck predicts 3300k out the wazoo and no daylight...that's how it is locally most of the time.

Try 2600 K or try the 6500 K's that I suggested ... the CFT/CFL bulbs (pack of 2 is less than $12) 23 watt = 100 watt equivalent are the ones to try it with

Yes in that range should IMO be fine but you may need to test lower K degree ones as well to see what works best for what you now want to achieve (diatoms I believe)

Yes that works indeed but I guess he is trying to find a non-chemical way to arrive at the same result but the 2 days treatment you suggest works very well indeed based on all the feedback that I got on a thread about Cyanos on another forum than this one ...

Well, if the OP is strictly doing this as experimental, then no issue. Not enough of a problem or me to have a dedicated setup for it. I find that if I don't introduce strange water with new livestock or coral introductions, my tank stays free of cyano. Most of the time new cyano accompanies coral frags or new fish, and that is how I get a periodic outbreak.

Albert, you probably won't remember me, but I used to work at Tropiquarium in Atlanta in the early 1990s with your buddy Chuck B. I worked the dry goods section in the front of the store and ran the cash register. We talked several times at the Trop. Man, that was when DLS and rotating wet/dry spraybars were cutting edge!!!! I still live in Atlanta, just south of you in Sandy Springs. I lived in Windward in Alpharetta where you live from 1993-2003, and in Sandy Springs from 2003 on. You should drop by for a visit sometime. I have a 465 gallon SPS reef, a 100 gallon softy/LPS reef, and a 265 gallon BB Discus tank.

Wow that is indeed a long time ago Dave ... and although I do remember the store, and Chuck and saw him for a bit after I moved to Atlanta in 1997 or so, I lost track of him after he was no longer working at that store by Exit 7 (Holcomb Bridge) .... after that ... no idea where he want or what he is doing ..

I also remember the young worker with his Sharpei and his little truck .... but no idea what happened to him or what he is doing ...

And of course on of the big jobs was setting up that huge tank at the Hyatt at Avanzare ... have not been there recently so not sure whether it still exists ...

Well if we are that close to each other we ought to try and get together one of these days ... Do you ever go to Pure Reef in Alpharetta ... as that is where I buy most of what I need. Just got two Banggai's there 2 days ago and put them in a 10 G tank (they are juveniles) and had them feeding after an hour in tank (slivers of frozen clam meat) ....

As for lighting, I'm gonna probably go for something with more actual wattage, as equivalent wattage is more beneficial for seeing things rather than growing them. Maybe 50ish actual watts a piece?? That would give me 5w per gallon, plenty bright!

I have 2 sockets. I will do one in the lower spectrum and one in the 6000-6700k range simultaneously.
Any specific bulbs you would recommend with these specs?

Yes indeed ... and for some most unusual post to bring that about is another first I am sure, but I am really glad that it came to happen ... I have dealt with Dave and the people at that store since the 80's .... so this was truly a surprise and a pleasure for me ...

And on your lighting ... agreed ..... true Wattage as opposed to equivalent one is going to be better for what you are trying to accomplish ....

And I am sure we'll all be following what happens as you progress with your experiment ..

I think it is konjk as the pronunciation but could be Contch too I guess as pronunciation ... It's like algae ... with a hard g or a soft g .... aljee or alghee ....
