If I remove the skimmer I would add an air stone in the stink tank, or in this case a fart stone because it will probably let out some nice odor. I plan on taking it out when the sand is pure pinkish white again

FYI I now have the Blue LED's in from the UK ... here is what they look like ... I have a limited supply so if you are interested PM me ...
Take it with you to an LFS so you can see how a coral you are interested in fluoresces when you shine the Blue Light on it .... Great for seeing the real colors ...

No problemo! And this light actually will keep corals open. I modded mine to light a portable nano for frag swaps I am working on. Holds a charge for 3hrs with rechargeable energizer batteries. It needs a heat sink though...after 1.5hrs its pretty hot lol. I used to go fishin with it and it made my wad sweat after too long :)
Sounds like an interesting light indeed ... I'll have to have a better look at it ... and on the getting hot, if I wee to get one I would not use i continuously like you suggest so the heat issue would not be a problem ... Thanks

Well this weekend was cool...went out and picked up a free 75g tank. I am going to add some baffles and make a new sump for my tank. The one I use now is only a 55g and its really skinny..I don't really like it that much, at least on the 90g. Now I will have to disconnect this filter and possibly remove it all together when it is time to upgrade.
This sounds like the end of the cyanobacterial scrubber, but it is not. In fact, I cannot see how well it works without taking it out to see the difference. I will not discard any water besides what I shake off rocks/equipment in during upgrade. Essentially it will be no different than a water change. The new sump will hold 2x the water with the new design, so about 50 total sump gallons.

Yes changes may indeed be needed as it seems IMO that things are getting worse rather than better ... but that is just my interpretation

Yes it is indeed but it seems to me that given the time is has been going on that although it may work in the long run, it does not seem practical to me for a Hobbyist ... Just my thoughts?
Well the display tank is not really getting worse...but it has not gotten past the diatoms!! I'm working on locating baffles or glass to cut into baffles. The local window shop wants $60 for 4 pieces and that is way too much IMO for some windows.
Then I have to organize help to dump the sump and take all the goodies up to the fish room. I'm looking at roughly 200lbs of water and rock and a distance of about 70 feet. Not looking forward to that :)
Now I will say a traditional Algae Turf Scrubber will be more efficient than this has proven. Luckily I am skilled enough to maintain the tank throughout this experiment and have only lost time. It did remove the in-tank cyano bloom so that's a plus. This is definitely the laziest method as I have done nothing but watch it. Lol
Of course it could just e the salt that feed the diatoms. I still have 20 more gallons than I though so I have another water change left before I try the other stuff.

Yes that would be a lot of work indeed and $60 for a few pieces of glass is indeed a bit much ... Some of those stores sell scrap glass and at times they may have pieces that are large enough for what you are looking to get.
My impression remains that if you run your project for long enough it will give you the desired results and that would be a nice achievement for sure, but as I said few hobbyist would IMO go to the extent it takes to get that result ... just saying .. and what you have achieved so far does prove that there is validity to how you are trying to manage the outbreak (intentionally brought about as you stated).

I think this could be a good preventative method, but is not ideal for existing setups due to space and the length of time it takes o plumb and let glue cure. Hoses could speed that up though.
Incorporated into a sump would be ideal and with less risk than a 3 tank system. I'm on my way home so I will see how it all looks today.

How about Acrylic from Home Depot or Lowe's or similar ... ? That should work too ...
Craigslist should have pumps listed I would imagine, in fact I need one myself and am going to look on the local craigslist for Alpharetta/Atlanta
And yes if everything is set up right from the start, then the whole method would be a lot easier to manage and may in fact not give you the nasties that you are running into ....
And on the salt ... it is indeed amazing what some of them contain that is not listed on the labels ... :(

One thing that sucks is that there are only lesser quality brands to find locally..so emergency salt runs are not going to be nearly as fast.
