Mycedium question

I bought this frag back in November and while it has colored up nicely growth has been almost non-existent. My parameters are all in order and it's on the bottom of my 20 gallon tank under a 175 watt MH bulb and two T5 actinics. (moderate flow) When I bought the coral I was told that as it grows it will take the form of a cup or bowl. Well here it is 5 months later and no go. I was just wondering if this is true or do they need to have a solid base underneath them to grow/spread on to? Thanks. :)

That monti on the bottom could be inhibiting growth. They will fight for space even if not touching. If it has been down that low for 5 months with no growth, try moving it higher in the water column away from other corals.

I have no experience with that genus, but these are general rules to think about.

Mycediums are generally very hardy and fast growers. I would do as DeniseAndy mentioned and move it. Mycedium can also tolerate more light than most other chalices. But acclimate slowly. Their shape is generally typical chalice growth. Flat and roundish not cupped.

Hmm... Space is kind of limited in my tank so moving it 4 or 5 inches to the right is really my only option. (on the bottom) I'll see if I can buy a small piece of live rock from the LFS and try mounting it to that.
