Nano 15 reef tank

Been about a month of having this set up, I’m dead positive it’s just going through the ugly stage right now, calcium levels are 1122 ppm , nitrates are at 5 and phosphate are like 0.02. Just wandering if only doing water changes 2 times week will get through this stage without having to use supplements or chemicals.

cool tank ! Ugly stage just takes patience so water changes would definitely allow you to ride it out. Be careful though , low nutrients in a new tank is prime for Dino’s takeover. Is calcium really that high? May need to do water changes to lower that

Yeah yesterday when I tested it was super high, any tips would be appreciated. I lowered my lights to 30% to help reduce algae growth

Why is it so high? Did you dose a bunch of calcium ? What is the alkalinity?

I haven’t dosed anything it but ab+ reef food and neonitrate to get the nitrates up because they were at 0 basically. I have no idea why the calcium levels are so high, maybe an incorrect test, I’m gonna do it again before the end of the night and see where it’s at, my salinity jumped up to 1.030 from 10.026 today as well. Fish are fine in there so far, water temp is at 78

Ive dosed ab+ for my corals, and neo nitrate to get the nitrates up a little bit, other than that ive just done water changes about twice a week since i put fish in there. Water temp is at 78. Salinity is a tad high at 1.030.

Salt water is new to me but I’ve been doing fresh water for a long time.

Saltwater is new to me, been doing fresh water with discus for a long time with amazing success.

Saltwater is a new ball game but freshwater does help , your going to want to figure out why your calcium is so high , that would prevent things growing properly or if it is a faulty test kit. Additionally figure out why the salinity swing , swings are bad in saltwater salinity should be 1.024-1.026 at all times , this could also be why yr calcium is very high

I buy my water pre-mix from my local fish store so it must be how they are mixing it?

Might be a lesson to not trust the LFS , not saying they are bad but I do not buy water from LFS. Do they change out there filters? When was the last time it was changed if ever? Ect.. the most important part of saltwater is water chemistry. I would recommend to purchase an RODI unit but a TDS meter and make your own water that way you know what levels you are adding (what if the LFS screwed up and alkalinity was 13 dkh , calcium 800 ect..)
