Hello everyone,

This is my first potential nusience algae popping up in my tank. My phosphates are high, still leaching from the pukani dry rock. I haven't introduced any corals yet as I am waiting on everything to stabilize out. Anyways looking for any help on what this algae is.

Well crap. Exactly what I didn't want to hear. Ok so any advice on what to do? I have been researching dinos over the past few days and it seems like eradication is slim at best.

Is your tank new ? This could be part of the uglies stage.

Since February. The brown has been around for about 2 months. I have coraline forming, but my calcium dropped low. Since dosing calcium I started seeing the darker colored algae in the pictures.

I don't have any snotty like substances in my tank, or at least none that I have noticed. Maybe the brown isn't dino's, but rather just the cyano? Hopefully.....

Ok I will have to determine if I have dinos when I get home. If so the below is my game plan after I get a microscope and verify the type.

1. Remove the refugium and allow nutrients to build back up.
2. Turn off all carbon dosing.
3. Stop water changes for now
4. Dose P & N if needed. (I think removing the fuge would increase these naturally).
5. Adding UV sterilizer if no change

Do you see anything I need to add or take away from this game plan? Maybe go dark for 72 hours? Change my lighting to only run for 5 hours instead of the 10 hour schedule it has now? Any other ideas?

BTW thank you so much for taking the time to walk through this with me.

I see an issue with this however. Since we know I have cyano, if I increase my nutrients the cyano is going to explode in population right? If so should I get rid of cyano first and then focus on the dinos, or should I focus on dinos and then kill off the cyano.

I am not at home until Wednesday, but looking at these pics and pics from a couple of months ago that brown algae has been present for a while. This picture was taken almost 3 months ago. I chalked that discoloration up to coralline algae starting to grow. I know this is much less algae, but my clean up crew hasn't faired very well in the last few weeks.

Personally I would get rid of cyno first because it’s easier for me

My thinking as well. Thanks for everything James. I'll post some updates later about the brown algae.
