Just picked this guy up. Was told it was a hybrid scopas black tang?

That's what it looks like to me. Z. rostratum does not have any markings they are jet black with the white scalpel. Sometimes they display a blueish hue at the base of the dorsal fin but only when excited or stressed. Hybrids have the pattern markings of scopas with the color of rostratum. Beautiful for sure, it's on my list but my other Hybrid and my purple would never allow it.

How long have you had yours. I heard the patterns could go away?

I had mine for about 3 years before I just recently sold him. To clarify he was a scopas, but I honestly didn't see any change in his pattering. I've read that with the scopas sometimes the larger / older fish can lose some of the patterns, but mine was up to nearly six inches and was holding steadfastly to his.

I wouldn't worry. The fish you have will look fly either way!! You really can't go wrong with any of the black tangs IMO.

Neat hybrid -- the face looks pure black tang that's impressive!
