Hey everybody, I have a 3month old 20G reef tank and last night, I went out and bought a bunch of equipment, the guy I bought them from, said if I wanted his fish, I stupidly said yes, not knowing that he was going to give me a cleaner wrasse, Bangai cardinal, and a random fish around the same size as juvenile clownfish that is grey/black, he also gave me a Hawaiian cleaner shrimp but I put that in the 20G because I knew it would be okay. My LFS is closed untill Tuesday and all the others are very far away, what do I do? My family is telling me to put all the fish in my 20G temporary until I can upgrade to a big enough tank for them, I know this would cause problems long term, but I really don’t know what to do, any advise is appreciated.

This is the stock I have right now: 4 margarita, 4 Nassarius, 4 Astrea, 2 Trochus
1 black clown, 1 black storm clown, bangai cardinal, 1 gsp coral, 1 montipora frag, 1 yasha goby, 1 rbta, 1 candy cane kryptonite, 1 war coral, variety of zoas, 1 toadstool, 1 Kenya tree, 1 RFA, 1 Octospawn, 1 Hawaiian cleaner shrimp

How long has nitrification bacteria cycle been completed? What are your tank parameters now?

That not a lot of fish biomass if you have a mature nitrification bacteria population established

Imo, those fish will overload your tank. Know any reefers near you with a qt tank they could tank them or go to a petco or petsmart and pick up a qt tank, powerhead and heater and mix up a batch of water and get the fish in qt.

If you have more rock then add it to provide more hiding spaces. But personally I wouldn't add those fish the tank. I've heard cleaner wrasses are mean. And you have one unidentified fish, it doesn't bode well IMO

“My LFS is closed untill Tuesday and all the others are very far away, what do I do?”

Harry,
Fish are shipped in small plastic bags, overnight or often longer. Keep fish in bucket until tomorrow and give to LFS.

Incidentally, what equipment did you get?

This is how my tank looked a couple days ago, cycle was complete 2 months ago with turbo start 900 it took 1month so tank has been up 3 months, he gave me multiple pounds of live rock, like a whole 5g bucket filled to the brim, no water in it, but it was moist so I put the live rock in the 5g with the fish to provide hiding spots and nitrification, I think I’m going to add the bangai into my DT, and leave the cleaner wrasse by itself with the random fish for the night

This tank looks very nice. But I would increase surface agitation.

I'm not quite sure what your question is. I'm guessing that you impulsively accepted the offer to take these free fish without considering the impact on your tank and current inhabitants.

If it were my tank, under no circumstances would I add these fish without observation in a holding tank for a few months.

Personally, I would just keep the new fish in a 5 gallon bucket(s) with air stones until you can donate them to the LFS.

I hope I've answered your question.

Honestly I think I kind of panicked when writing this, do you think adding the other bangai cardinal would be okay space wise? They’ve all been treated with copper and where from the same LFS that I buy from and I didn’t quarantine any of my fish from them

I would not add anything to your tank without first observing in a separate tank. Really; its a nice tank and I wouldn't want to see you jack it up.

The sellers generosity leaves me feeling suspicious.

Harry,
Understand this about parasites like ich: copper will not effect the ich life cycle when it is on the fish imbedded in fish slime. If your tank is parasite free at this time, you would be well advised not to endanger that.

To answer your specific question about adding cardinal fish to display: from a biofiltration point of view, it’s not a problem.

The seller was getting out the hobby, he just gave me the fish because he was about an hour from the same LFS we go to so I was closer, the 300$ was for the three ai primes, duetto ato and live rock, all the primes are good but I haven’t tested the ATO.

So he said he treated them all in copper power for two weeks and than added them into his display tanks, I’m assuming he had the bangai and other fish for a couple months/years based off the size of them, does that make them safe?

What you have established in 3 months is in good health.

Do not add the free fish into your tank and risk causing an outbreak of stress, or fighting for territory, and common disease and pests that could be dormant in your tank or in the free livestock. Keep those in a 5 gallon bucket and donate them to the LFS. You have to nice of an existing tank to risk over crowding and disease issues trying to save 3 may easily kill them all.

Do you think it would be safer to keep the bangai in the 20G for the night or transfer him back to the 5G bucket, or would I be able to keep him temporarily for like a week in the 20G or 5G until I upgrade to a 40G plumbed with A 20G sump?

Either use buckets, or if you have a plastic bin keep them in either of those
