Hey Guys! Just installed a new Nero3 and currently using the Mobius app to control it. I an setting it up in pulse mode and trying to determine how the speed percentage operates For example, if i set “Max Speed” at 50%, i expect the “on” GPH to be 50% of the max (2000) or 1000gph. But it sets it at 1325gph. What is the “ max speed” setting basing its gph at?

Thanks for the help

I would assume this is true for most controllable pumps, but certainly for the Ecotech Vortechs and AI Nero's: the "minimum" pump speed is not 0 gph. I would guess that truly stopping and starting the pump (deenergizing and then energizing) is tough on the pump's electronic controls and allows for a greater likelihood of an animal swimming or crawling inside the pump shroud (and either hurting the animal or damaging the pump).

So, while you are able to set the 'max' speed, there is some built-in minimum default speed. When I set my Nero 3 to "Pulse" with max speed at 100%, when the pump is "off" it is registering 663 gph on Mobius (and 2000 gph when pulse in 'on'). Reasonably, 50% 'max speed' would be half-way between 2000 gph and 663 gph (not 0), which is: 50% Flow Rate = [[2000-663]/2 + 663] = 1,332 gph.

When I set my Nero 3 to max = 50% in Pulse mode, Mobius registers 1325 gph (close enough for government work). 🙂

Converting this to an equation and rearranging, to solve for 'x':

Where:
x = max speed setting (in %)
Vtarget = target volumetric flow rate
Vmax = max volumetric flow rate

Vmin = minimum volumetric flow rate
And Assuming:
Vtarget = 1000 gph

Then:
x = [Vtarget - Vmin] / [Vmax - Vmin]

x = [1000 - 663] / [2000-663]
x = 337 / 1337
x = 0.252 or 25%

So, if you want a 1,000 gph flow rate as your 'max pulse' setting, try setting 'max pulse %' to 25%.

If it were me (and in practicality, as related to flow dynamics in a reef tank) I would set the 'max %' at the highest % that did not:

  1. Create a sand storm
  2. Damage any nearby corals/algae
  3. Did not risk sucking the smallest fish in the aquarium into the pump shroud
