Hello everyone,

I recently picked up a nice size gem tang from my LFS and he seems to be acting a little funny just hanging out in the corner by the overflow. He was added on Sunday and comes out every so often but when I am at the tank he just hides in the corner it seems. The one thing I noticed is his stomach looks a little deformed. Gem is eating seaweed pellets and goes after mysis when given and I have seen it poop and all looks normal there. My LFS does not feed very well mostly just brine once a day, I realize the gem is thin and plan on offering a good diet to fatten him up.

When the gem was added I did have a whitetail and he was tormenting the gem for a bit less than an hour ... I since pulled the whitetail and took him to the LFS.

Stocking list at least for tangs.
Sailfin 3-4 inches
Chocolate Tang 3-4 inches
Gem is about 4-5 inches

Will post some pics shortly.

Unless Im seeing wrong, fish appears to have velvet but need clearer pics to confirm
There is damage at the mouth suggesting damage from being netted as some LFS are not so kind when it comes to netting. Should heal on its own but have seachem kanaplex on hand in case it becomes infected.
If velvet, some signs you will see are fish scratching body against hard objects, lethargic behavior, Loss of appetite and weight loss, Rapid, labored breathing, Fins clamped against the body, and typically stay at the surface of the water, or remain in a position where a steady flow of water is present in the aquarium.
Please post clearer pics of fish. For diet, add more than dry diet you are offering such as:
LRS herbivore diet
Formula 2 flake and frozen
TDO Pellets
small plankton
Hikari Marine cuisine
Ocean nutrition veggie diet
spirulina brine shrimp
Prime reef

Stomach is pinched and either insufficient diet or constipated

More pics.
I did add some more sand to the wrasse bed the other day and he did hide out in the cloud for a bit. I would think it would have not stayed on him.

Thanks for the feeback. he seems to hover in the tank and is watching me when I am there. I don't see signs you have mentioned... although my opinion might be skewed. No other fish are exhibiting these signs either including my other tangs.

The sailfin was already in the tank before adding the Gem and chocolate ... I did see the sailfin flex a little at the gem a bit ago. Could it just be aggression from the sailfin keeping him in the corner?

wanted to bump this up as if it is velvet im going to need to move fast :)

@vetteguy53081
In the latest pics, I dont see the velvet appearance I did and as mentioned, aggression can play a role and sailfins as well as powder blues are jerks and will antagonize a given fish. Next time you see this, please post a video.

Thanks so much for the reply. I was on pin and needles to be honest. I have since removed the sailfin moving to sump and seeing how the gem reacts.

Any thoughts on aggression from the Chocolate? Both Gem and chocolate were added to the tank on the same day. Choclate is smaller and a lot more active.

Update. Since pulling the Sailfin the Gem is not exhibiting the behavior as much. Gem is coming out more and poking around.

However....

he has a new fear

the dreaded ....

Veggie clip!

For real... just seems a little skittish of it.

Either way, if the fish wasn't quarantined with copper/prazipro it should be - and the copper will take care of velvet or ich (I don't see ich). How is the breathing - which is a symptom of velvet? Of course it is new and injured, may be a little skittish, but I would tend to consider treating with the usual QT protocol. (and consider same for all of your fish)
