i am filling my tank today. When I opened a bag of sand it smelled like rotten eggs (h2s). I'm guessing whatever bacteria was in the sand died. My other bags of sand do not have this smell. Is this still safe to use?

I would say no.
Live sand should smell like the lfs if you have one. Stir comes from anaerobic bacteria which means they don't need oxygen to live. It's toxic. Kind of a salty, ocean type smell is what it smells like.
You should wash it out really good if you can't return in. I would return if you could.
